I owe my daily bread to my greatest passion – fashion and traveling. A few hour before taking off to Frankfurt to resume my studies after three months in Nepal I was roaming the streets of Katmandu with my backpack. With no success, I was looking for a suitable present for my girlfriend. I needed a souvenir characteristic of Nepal; but, above all, it should have been small enough to fit into my overfull backpack. I decided to buy scarlet pashmina.
The joy from the meeting was great. That from pashmina was still greater. This way it came about that my girlfriend asked me to buy five-six pashminas for herself and her friends on my tour of India in the spring of 2001: in Germany such pashmina cost too much at that time, and its retail price was about five times as high as that in India (about 300 Euro!). Thus, I made up my mind to bring along a couple more pashminas and try my hand as a pashmina tradesman.
From then on my stimulus has been the same: I wanted to offer my customers the best quality for the best possible price. So I saved on anything I could. My headquarters were my dormitory room, my place of business – a self-made web-shop, promotion – recommendations of my satisfied customers. Oops, I already gave away my trade secret: new customers come on the suggestion of old ones and I’d be surprised if the case were different with you! Quite a few of my customers have a complete color range of my pashminas...
My traveler’s experience has helped me a lot with trading. Personal contacts with suppliers are especially important for me. I meet them twice a year (once in Germany and once in Nepal), and so I have formed a detailed picture of pashmina production in India and Nepal. I certainly do not want to make money on child labor or merciless exploitation of adult workers... During my visits I have learnt a lot about pashmina and will be happy to share my knowledge with you. If you still have any questions, please, drop me an e-mail or give me a phone call. If you somehow fail to get in touch, you will probably find me at the university or in the library.
