Pure cashmere
To disappoint you right away: if there is such a thing as “classical pashmina” it definitely doesn’t consist of 100% cashmere. However, you shouldn’t treat pashmina from 100% cashmere wool with disregard... Cashmere wool is the softest of all wool sorts. If pashmina consists of 100% cashmere and is “naturally biting” as any other yet unworn animal hair, it will most definitely be your neck’s best friend. Cashmere wool is extremely soft and makes you feel nice both in bad winter weather and on summer evenings.
100% cashmere pashmina can be identified by light and wide-spreading patterns of the fabric. Picture yourself the following:
In the surface of the first shawl you notice small “wholes” characteristic of 100% pashmina. If pashmina is pink, you can see well how light this material is: pashmina seems almost transparent from below. As for quality brown pashmina visually reminds pure cashmere wool: the material seems “dimmed” and is therefore more suitable for shining surfaces or, in general, for an unpretentious look than a slightly glittering cashmere-silk combination. To make everything perfect, for example, I’d add 100% cashmere pashmina to a smooth shiny leather jacket rather than an article from a cashmere-silk mix.
Please note, that pure cashmere is an extremely sensitive material. You must carefully fold or roll your shawl before putting it into your handbag. It would be a pity if you damaged an expensive shawl with a key or another sharp-edged object. On the contrary, good care after your pashmina will yield long years of comfortable wear!
I’m constantly asked about best ways to care after 100% cashmere pashmina. If the label mentions dry-cleaning “for reasons of safety” so far I haven’t had any negative effects with hand-washing using “Perwoll”. Otherwise, after visiting restaurants etc. it is enough to hang pashmina out for some time in the fresh air. Next day it is again dew-fresh...
